Transcript of Press Briefing by the Official Spokesperson


A press release was issued on the appointment of Shri Swashpawan Singh currently Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, as the next Ambassador of India to the State of Kuwait in succession to Shri Prabhu Dayal. He is expected to take up his assignment shortly.

Visit of Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra to India

  • His Excellency Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, is on a four-day visit to India from 26-29 November 2001, at the invitation of Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It would be the first visit of a Thai Prime Minister to India after twelve years.
  • Prime Minister Thaksin is accompanied by a high-level delegation consisting of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Mr. Somkid Jatusripitak, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Surakiart Sathirathai, Minister of Commerce Mr. Adisai Bodharamik, Minister of Industry Mr. Suriya Jungroongruangkit and other high ranking officials, apart from leading representatives of Thai business and industry.
  • Dr. Thaksin is visiting Bangalore from 26th to 27th November 2001. While in Bangalore Prime Minister Shinawatra would visit the Indian Space Research Organisation, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the Software Technology Park of India and Infosys. The Thai Prime Minister is being hosted a dinner by the Governor of Karnataka on 26th November 2001
  • Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra would also address a Business meeting organized by Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI)
  • Prime Minister Shinawatra would be accorded a ceremonial welcome on 28th November 2001 in New Delhi. The visiting dignitary would call on the President of India Shri K.R. Narayanan and Vice President Shri Krishan Kant.
  • Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra would hold extensive discussions with Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee on all aspects of bilateral relations between India and Thailand as well as on regional and international issues including ASEAN. They would also discuss measures to diversify and strengthen bilateral relations in a wide range of areas, particularly with regard to trade, economic and scientific cooperation.
  • Minister of External Affairs, Shri Jaswant Singh, Minister of Home Affairs, Shri L.K. Advani, Minister for Information Technology, Shri Pramod Mahajan and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Smt. Sonia Gandhi will call on the visiting dignitary.
  • An MoU on Cooperation in the area of Information Technology and Services is expected to be signed during the visit.
